Session 2 of 8

Joining God’s Work

Our work matters when it serves the flourishing of God’s world.

Big ideaGod remains the primary worker. He invites image-bearers to develop creation’s possibilities and seek the good of neighbors, communities, and the wider world.

By the end

Participants can trace how one form of their work affects other people and identify one way to pursue greater care, beauty, justice, or usefulness.

Reconnect · 2 min

Say or askLast time we named one ordinary task as meaningful work. Did anyone notice that task differently—or remember the idea while doing it? A one-sentence response is enough.

Set up · 2 min

SayLast time we saw that work is part of God’s good creation. Tonight we will ask what that work is for. Genesis describes both developing what God has made and caring for what belongs to him.

Read · 2–3 min

Genesis 2:15 and Psalm 24:1

Read both verses aloud. Hold the words ‘work,’ ‘take care,’ and ‘the Lord’s’ together as you listen.

Watch · 5:06

Before you press playListen for the two dimensions Pastor Bill finds in Genesis 2:15. Notice how both development and protection are necessary.

Connect · 1–2 min

Connect the idea

Faithful work is not simply staying busy or achieving personal success. It uses what God has entrusted to us for purposes that reflect his care.

Discuss · 12–22 min

Make space for the circle.

  1. Think of something useful, beautiful, or life-giving that exists because many people’s work came together. Whose contributions are easy to miss?

  2. What is the difference between treating part of creation as an owner and receiving it as a steward?

  3. Who is affected—directly or indirectly—by the work you currently do? What might flourishing look like for them?

  4. Where does your work currently lean: developing and producing, or protecting and caring? Where might it need better balance?

Practice · 3–5 min

Follow the ripple

Choose one recurring task. Write down three people or parts of creation affected by it. Make one small change that better serves one of them.

Invite people to write it down. Participation is encouraged, not policed.

How we’ll return to thisSession 3 opens by reconnecting with this practice.

Prayer transition · 1+ min

Pray for eyes to see the people affected by our work and for wisdom to develop and protect God’s gifts faithfully.

Amen

Leader care

Facilitate carefully

  • ‘Common good’ means conditions that help neighbors and communities flourish. It does not mean that every organization or task automatically serves good purposes.
  • Keep the examples concrete. Ask ‘Who benefits? Who bears the cost?’ when the group stays abstract.
