Session 7 of 8

Salt and Light Where You Are

Christian witness is a distinct, present, beautiful way of life.

Big ideaJesus sends his people into the world as salt and light. We ‘stand out and get out’ through good deeds that reflect Christ and direct attention toward the Father.

By the end

Participants can plan one humble act of presence or service that fits their actual setting and respects other people.

Reconnect · 2 min

Say or askWho had an opportunity to practice the visible virtue chosen last time? What helped or got in the way? Keep reports brief and free of self-congratulation.

Set up · 2 min

SayJesus does not ask his people to hide their faith or perform it for attention. He describes a community whose life is distinct, present, and beautiful enough that neighbors see good deeds and give glory to God.

Read · 2–3 min

Matthew 5:3–10, 13–16

Ask two readers to share the Beatitudes and then the salt-and-light passage. Listen for the character Jesus sends into public life.

Watch · 2:09

Connect · 1–2 min

Connect the idea

‘Stand out’ does not mean acting superior; Jesus has just described meek, merciful, pure, peacemaking people. ‘Get out’ means being genuinely present where that character can bless others.

Discuss · 12–22 min

Make space for the circle.

  1. Where have you encountered Christian presence that felt genuinely hopeful, beautiful, or useful rather than performative?

  2. How do the Beatitudes shape what Jesus means by salt, light, and ‘good deeds’?

  3. Which tendency is stronger for you: hiding or blending in, or standing out in ways that can feel harsh or self-promoting?

  4. What is one need in your workplace, neighborhood, school, volunteer setting, or regular ‘third place’ that a quiet good deed could address?

Practice · 3–5 min

A deed with no spotlight

Choose one useful, beautiful, merciful, or peacemaking action that serves someone in a setting where you are already present. Do it without manufacturing attention. Be ready to explain your hope gently if someone asks.

Invite people to write it down. Participation is encouraged, not policed.

How we’ll return to thisSession 8 opens by reconnecting with this practice.

Prayer transition · 1+ min

Pray for the places and professions represented in the group. Ask God for humble courage, genuine presence, and deeds that point beyond us to the Father.

Amen

Leader care

Facilitate carefully

  • Do not turn ‘salt’ into political dominance or ‘light’ into personal publicity. Jesus’ stated result is the Father’s glory.
  • Some participants work in roles where explicit religious conversation is restricted. Faithful service, integrity, and appropriate speech remain meaningful witness.
Pressing Next marks this session complete.
